Gardens by the Bay: All you need to know

Few cities are as distinctive as Singapore. This city-state serves as a distinction between the nations that are its immediate neighbors. It is surrounded by an aura of elegance, wealth, and high position, which compels it to provide things that are as unusual and peculiar as its Gardens by the Bay.

Gardens by the Bay, also known as the Gardens of the Bay, is a project that was started in 2012 and completed on land that was recovered from the ocean. A garden area that is more than 100 hectares in size and is responsible for encircling the island of Singapore behind the Marina Bay Sands hotel. The major actors in this garden are the flora and architecture that can be found inside this garden.

A location that is cool and relaxing even on the warmest days, where one can get away from the asphalt of the city, and where the most renowned trees are not actually trees but supertrees, which are colossal instances of sustainable bioconstruction.

It covers an area of about 100 hectares. On the territory of the park are:

  • Two massive greenhouse greenhouses—the Flower Dome (Flower House) and the Cloud Forest (Cloud Forest).
  • Eighteen giant “trees” are also Super Trees (Supertree Grove).
  • At a height of 22 m (skyway), which connects two huge supertrees
  • A bar and restaurant on top of one of the supertrees
  • Large children’s entertainment area (Children’s Garden)
  • Pavilion with cacti
  • Themed gardens with sculptures
  • Lake
  • huge amounts of tropical vegetation.

Supertrees

Massive concrete and iron structures, termed “supertrees” by the project’s creators, resemble future giant trees. There are a lot of plants growing on top of the trunks of trees in rainforests, making them appear to be genuine trees.

Supertrees are home to more than 200 plant species, including ferns, orchids, and other tropical blooms. More than 163,000 distinct plants grow on each supertree.

The park has a total of 18 supertrees. They range in height from 50 meters at the tallest to 25 meters at the shortest. Also, visitors to the park are able to cross a bridge that connects the two tallest supertrees.

From the observation deck, you can see the whole Gardens by the Bay park, including the area’s beautiful foliage and impressive architecture. The 128-meter-long bridge rises 22 meters above the ground.

It’s a misconception that supertrees are a waste of money and a waste of resources in general. Eleven of the Supertrees have photovoltaic systems installed, allowing them to harvest energy from the sun during the day and use it to power lights at night. The Supertrees are well-illuminated in this image.

At 20:45 every day, a light display begins in which the supertrees appear to be dancing in response to the music.

They deserve to be on the list of things to do in Singapore that visitors should not miss. Additionally, it’s a good idea to take a second look at these futuristic artifacts during the light display at night.

As an added benefit, rainfall may be collected by supertrees and used to irrigate plants. Various businesses, ranging from stores to cafés, may be found at the apex of these buildings. The supertree’s elevator can take you all the way to the top. Nonetheless, you’ll have to pay for the elevator separately. However, the vistas are truly spectacular from this vantage point.

A nighttime visit is preferable if you can only go once or twice a week because of time constraints. They are believed to be the best. However, the entire park, not just the supertrees, is awe-inspiring. There is a lot to see in the Gardens by the Bay.

The whole area is 54 hectares. However, if you have the time, it’s worth the effort because the creation of this park cost more than a billion dollars, and you’re guaranteed to be impressed by what you see.

OCBC Skyway

The path (skyway) connecting the two giant trees is 128 meters long and 22 meters high. This path can be reached by elevator and has a beautiful view of the plants along the bay.

Gardens at the Bay skyway

Children aged 3 to 12 years old pay SGD 5 for the Skyway admission charge. You can buy tickets either on the spot (you can’t pay with a credit card) or in advance: greenhouses + skyway here.

The skyway is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., the ticket office is open until 8 p.m., and the last person is allowed to ascend at 8:30 p.m.

Greenhouse domes

The park’s admission is free of charge. There is, however, a fee for access to some unique greenhouses. Two enormous domes, each the size of four football fields, make up the special greenhouses. It’s called the “Dome of Flowers,” and it’s one of several. It has a lot of flora from the Mediterranean.

The “Cloud Forest” is a separate building that holds luxuriant vegetation from a humid tropical region, such as palm trees. A 35-meter waterfall may be found in the same dome.

The park is open from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m., and visitors must depart by 2 a.m. When it comes to visitation hours, the domed greenhouses are open from nine in the morning until nine in the evening daily. Every day they go to work. closed at 8 p.m. with only one cashier on duty.

Adults pay $28 and children pay $15 for a general admission ticket that enables access to both greenhouses. You’ll have to pay an extra $4 to enjoy the audio guide’s additional features.

Bar and restaurant on one of the trees

A restaurant and a bar may be found atop one of the supertrees. Adults pay SGD 20 and children pay SGD 12.50 to enter the rooftop bar. A beverage of your choice is provided, whether it be wine, beer, or soda. There is, of course, a bar on the second floor where you may get drinks and munchies.

The futuristic tree restaurant serves both lunch and supper. Booking a table in advance is highly recommended in this case. 17% tax is applicable to each order, with a minimum of 80 SGD per person.

The bar is open from 10:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily.

Lunch is served from 12:00 p.m. to 17:00 p.m., and supper is served from 17:00 p.m. to 23:30 p.m.

Children’s entertainment

There is a children’s village located in the park gardens along a bay that opened a few years ago. Like a fountain that can be enjoyed by both adults and children, this will be your favorite feature. There are also restrooms, a children’s café, and a changing room facility. An adventure route and tree homes are both nearby.

It is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 to 19:00, on Saturdays from 9:00 to 21:00, and on Sundays from 9:00 to 21:00. Monday is a day off, so there’s no work to be done.

There is no entrance fee for this.

And at the end of the day… a show of music, light, and color

The Garden Rhapsody Light Show begins nightly as soon as the sun goes down and continues until midnight. This is the highlight of the program right here. There are two separate presentations that take place at 7:45 p.m. and 8:45 p.m., and both of them feature the lights of the supertrees synchronized to music in order to create a ballet of color.

The magnificent trees of Gardens by the Bay move their leaves to the music of Chopin and Disney films, disco music from the 1970s, local Singaporean music, operas, and even Christmas carols during the month of December. The music changes with the seasons.

Facilities in the gardens

There are drinking fountains and public bathrooms scattered around ‘Gardens by the Bay’.

Additionally, there are a number of cafés, restaurants, and ice cream shops. We highly recommend trying the ice cream from our own brand, which has a variety of unique tastes.

When it rains a lot, it’s nice to have a few places to shelter yourself.

Singaporeans are known for their satays, which can be found at the far end of the Gardens by the Bay hawker booths.

Tips for the visit

  • If you do not like to dine at Gardens by the Bay, you may do so at The Shoppes, which is located at the base of the Marina Bay Sands hotel and has several dining alternatives.
  • After the supertrees display concludes, be sure to go around the section closest to the bay, from which you can see a stunning nighttime view of the Singapore Flyer.
  • If your schedule permits, we recommend that you visit the gardens in the afternoon so that you may view the light and sound display at the conclusion of the day. You can get there after lunch, take your time walking through the gardens and greenhouses, and then just chill out until the evening show.
  • Carry insect repellant. During the time of the light and sound display, they are extremely active when night falls.

Best Time To Visit Gardens by the Bay:

If you haven’t already bought tickets, the best time to go to Gardens by the Bay is between February and April, when the dry season starts. And while you might think that May through August would be a good time to visit, the city is too crowded during these months because Singapore’s neighbors are burning crops.

Allow at least two hours of your time to see two greenhouses.

Take a stroll in the park during the day, ascend the skyway, and then grab a bite to eat at a local café or at the food court at the shopping pier at Marina Bay Sands before returning to the trees at night to see the performance and wander through the park already illuminated.

If you’re short on time but still want to see this site, head to the gardens by the bay for a nighttime performance.

This is still a stunning scene, though, when lit from behind!
